There needs to be a plan about this. Having the county come down with dysentary will not be helpful. Do we ration water? We have two rivers bordering the county, what needs to be done to make it safe to drink?

Buy bottle water & keep it on hand to drink for this emergency.

There may come a time when you want to wash your body. A creek or river provides water - You will not feel clean. I suggest Every time you go to dispose of a 2 litter bottle, gallon milk jug or such type container - You clean & rinse them out & fill them with clean water & store them in a basement or such place where they will not freeze & thaw(Causing the plastic to break down). If used within a few months - it is drinkable - If longer you'll boil it or just to be safe boil it. The water can be used for washing or flushing a toilet(See Sanitation). If you are lucky enough to have a spring on your property - Problem solved - Dig it out - Box it in - allowing the water in the box to be continuously replaced by fresh water.

All of the problem modern man faces today in the face of an emergency have already been solved by our forefathers. Find old records or talk to someone who is in their 80s. Ask about the good old days & how things were done before government decided we were to dumb to take care of ourselves. The surprisingly simple answers may just be a pleasant awaking to a new way of solving today's problems.

That all sounds good.

What if for some reason you need to purify water on hand for drinking and have no source readily available? I have heard iodine used for this purpose, but how much per gallon? Are there other methods?
